Why Aussies Call the Ibis a "Bin Chicken" (And Why We Love Them Anyway)

If you've ever had a sausage sanga snatched out of your hand at the park, you've already met Australia's most notorious bird. Long beak, scruffy white feathers, bald black head and absolutely zero shame. Say g'day to the bin chicken.

What is a bin chicken?

"Bin chicken" is the affectionate (and slightly rude) Aussie nickname for the Australian white ibis. Other local favourites include "tip turkey" and "dumpster diver". Whatever you call it, you'll find it strutting through city parks, food courts and – of course – wheelie bins right along the east coast.

Why are there so many in our cities?

Ibis are native wetland birds. Over recent decades, as many of their inland wetland habitats dried out, large numbers moved into towns and cities, where they discovered an all-you-can-eat buffet of chips, leftover sandwiches and overflowing bins. They're clever, adaptable and very, very persistent. Basically, they're living their best life.

From pest to national icon

Somewhere between stealing our lunch and photobombing our barbies, the bin chicken became a bit of a legend. It's popped up in memes, tattoos, street art and birthday cakes, and it even came close to the top spot in a national bird of the year poll. Aussies love an underdog – even one that smells faintly of rubbish.

A quick reminder: the white ibis is a protected native bird, so admire it, laugh at it, guard your hot chips from it – but never harm it.
